Route: 台中 (Táizhōng) 太平 (Tàipíng) (136縣道, 136 Xiàn Dào) > 南投 (Nántóu) 國姓 (Guóxìng) > 中潭公路 (Zhōngtán Gōnglù) > 北山村 (Běishān Cūn) > 玉門關 (Yùmén Guān) > 草湳濕地 (Cǎonǎn Shīdì) > 紙教堂 (Zhǐ Jiàotáng) > 草屯 (Cǎotún) > 霧峰 (Wùfēng)
- Total Distance: Approximately 85-100 kilometers (depending on the starting point)
- Total Elevation Gain: Approximately 1,200 meters

- Important Notes: This route is highly challenging, especially with several consecutive steep climbs exceeding 10% on 136縣道 (136 Xiàn Dào) and the latter part of 北山村 (Běishān Cūn). It is recommended to ride with companions for mutual support.
Chapter 1: The Ascent to 赤崁頂 (Chìkàn Dǐng), a Test from 136縣道 (136 Xiàn Dào)
For cycling enthusiasts in 台中 (Táizhōng), "136縣道 (136 Xiàn Dào)" is not just a road, but an iconic challenge. Our journey typically begins at "一江橋 (Yījiāng Qiáo)" in 太平 (Tàipíng), with the goal of reaching the convenience store in 國姓 (Guóxìng), 南投 (Nántóu). This core section is about 30 kilometers long with an elevation gain of over 700 meters.
The first half is a gentle climb with an average gradient of 7%, but don't be deceived by this section; the real test lies in the second half. After the halfway point, the gradient increases sharply, turning into a series of steep 9-10% climbs, with instantaneous maximum gradients reaching 15%. The highest point of the route is "赤崁頂 (Chìkàn Dǐng)." Successfully reaching the summit means you have completed the most arduous part of this route.
Safety Reminder: Recent heavy rains may have affected the foundation of the "赤崁頂 (Chìkàn Dǐng)" viewing platform. Please be sure to obey the warning lines and do not approach hazardous areas.
The descent from 赤崁頂 (Chìkàn Dǐng) to 國姓 (Guóxìng) is equally steep. Be sure to control your speed and watch out for leaves, dead branches, or moss on the road surface. Safety first.
Chapter 2: Traversing the Valleys, Delicacies on the 中潭公路 (Zhōngtán Gōnglù) and in 北山村 (Běishān Cūn)
After arriving in 國姓 (Guóxìng), we will proceed along the "中潭公路 (Zhōngtán Gōnglù)." This road winds through valleys with a flat surface and open views. Looking up, you will see the elevated bridges of National Freeway 6 weaving through the mountains, creating a spectacular contrast.
After cycling for about 8 kilometers, a large bridge with a water deer statue will guide us to "北山村 (Běishān Cūn)." This village, after being devastated by the "921大地震 (921 Dàdìzhèn)," has developed a resilient culture of water deer farming and Hakka cuisine.
It is highly recommended to rest and refuel here. A food stall next to the convenience store sells authentic "米苔目 (Mǐ Tái Mù)," whose chewy noodles and delicious broth are the best choice for replenishing energy.
Chapter 3: Deep into a Hidden Gem, from 玉門關 (Yùmén Guān) to the 紙教堂 (Zhǐ Jiàotáng)
After a short break, we will turn onto a quieter path. This section has very few people and vehicles and features a complete forest ecosystem; it is my favorite part of the entire journey. The route winds through hills, and although there are two main climbs with some gradients reaching 16%, the cool shade and pristine natural scenery make all the sweat worthwhile.
Along the way, you will pass "玉門關 (Yùmén Guān) Waterfall," a canyon carved by a stream with clear, cold water. If time permits, it's worth stopping for a visit. Next, you will arrive at "草湳濕地 (Cǎonǎn Shīdì)," a successfully restored ecological park that is home to various species of frogs and insects, and a well-known firefly viewing spot on summer nights.
Additionally, you will see a crop growing in the fields taller than rice paddies; that is 南投 (Nántóu)'s specialty, "筊白筍 (Jiǎo Bái Sǔn)" (water bamboo).
The end of this hidden gem trail is the famous "紙教堂 (Zhǐ Jiàotáng)." This unique structure carries the shared memory of rebirth from earthquakes in both Taiwan and Japan and is well worth a visit.
Chapter 4: The Windy Return, a Perfect Finale at 霧峰 (Wùfēng) Market
After leaving the 紙教堂 (Zhǐ Jiàotáng), we will reconnect with the 中潭公路 (Zhōngtán Gōnglù) for the return trip. This part of the journey is mostly a gentle descent, making for relatively easy riding. It should be noted that if you are returning between 10 AM and 3 PM, the temperature will be higher, so be sure to take precautions against the sun and stay hydrated.
We set the end of our journey in "霧峰 (Wùfēng)," 台中 (Táizhōng). The best way to reward yourself is to dive into the local traditional market to find the most authentic snacks and food, putting a perfect end to this wonderful challenge (please note: the market is mostly open before noon).

- 玉門關 (Yùmén Guān): A scenic spot in a river valley in 國姓 (Guóxìng) Township, 南投 (Nántóu), known for its clear water and spectacular canyon terrain. It is a secret spot for playing in the water in summer.

- 紙教堂 (Zhǐ Jiàotáng): A paper tube church designed by a Japanese architect for the Great Hanshin Earthquake. It was moved to 埔里 (Pǔlǐ), 南投 (Nántóu), after the 921 Earthquake, symbolizing post-disaster rebirth and hope.
